Off-page SEO As Part of the Big Online Marketing Puzzle

SEO can be really overwhelming, especially when you don’t know exactly what steps to take. But if you can develop a basic understanding of both on-page and off-page optimization, you’ll have an opportunity to be ahead of your competitors.

On-page SEO happens within the site (see An Introduction to Web Design and SEO On-Page Optimization ), while off-page SEO deals with the activities that you do away from your site to raise the ranking of your page. Most people associate off-page SEO with link building but it actually goes beyond that. Off-page SEO refers to series of techniques that can be used to improve the position of a website in the search engine results page (SERPs). Off-page SEO also tells Google what others think about your site. For instance, if you’ve got a lot of valuable links pointing to your pages, search engines will assume that you’ve got great content, thus, higher search engine results and more page visitors will follow.

Understanding the essential factors of off-page SEO which will contribute to how good your website ranks in the search engines, is vital to your success. And that’s what we’re going to share here.

Number of Inbound Links

The biggest force behind boosting your search engine ratings depends on the number of other web pages that have links pointing to your website. A hyperlink to a page is counted as a vote for a specific page. Hence, the more links that are directed to your page, the more “votes you have in the eyes of Google.

Anchor Text to Specific Pages

The text that appears hyperlinked whenever you create a link is called the anchor text. This helps search engines classify what your pages are about, and know which keywords they should be ranking for. For instance, you have a page called “Marketing tips”. Ideally, you would want the links you get pointing back to this page to have anchor text like “best marketing tips” rather than “click here” or simply the URL of the page. While you want to target your keywords with the right anchor text, you don’t always get the option to pick the anchor text you want. But don’t worry, there is value in a link from a good quality source no matter what the anchor text is.

Quality of Links

Not all links have the same value. Links from well-established sites, especially ones that are considered an authority in your niche, are much more valuable than links from more obscure sites. High PR websites, .edu or .gov websites and authority websites are some of the examples of sites that are valuable.

Link Building Speed

Another important thing to take note is the rate at which your website is building links. However, you don’t want to build links unnaturally fast or create a huge number in one hit and then stop, because this can raise the suspicion of search engines and can result to your site being penalized. Take note that search engines know what is natural and what is not. Building 10,000 low-quality links in one day especially when your site is 20 days old, just doesn’t look right.

A successful off-site SEO strategy will generate the following benefits to website owners:

The website will rank higher in the SERPs and this also means more traffic.

Higher rankings also means greater exposure because it gets more links, more visits and more social media mentions.

No matter what, off-page SEO will always play a great role in the big puzzle of online marketing.
